Before Antietam

Of Scottish parents, he enlisted in Porter Township, Schuylkill County, PA and mustered in Pottsville on 26 September 1861 as a Private in Company H, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot, probably in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital at Camp B in Frederick, MD on 24 October and was discharged there on a Surgeon's Certificate of 23 December 1862. He began receiving a veterans pension in March 1863.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a laborer in Porter Township, PA. In 1900 he was listed as a "gentleman" boarding with his sister Isabella (Powell) and her family there. In 1910, then age 72, he was living alone, still in Porter Township.
