He enlisted and mustered on 23 September 1861 as a Private in Company D, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital at Camp B in Frederick, MD on 24 October, transferred to Camp A, and was sent back to his company on 8 November 1862. He mustered out on 21 October 1864 at the end of his term of enlistment.
