Age 22, he enlisted on 26 August and mustered in Pottsville on 23 September 1861 as a Corporal in Company F, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

He was wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability on 25 February 1863.
