Confederate (CSV)

Private

Elijah Herring

Home State: Georgia

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 38th Georgia Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

From Milton County, GA he enlisted and mustered in Atlanta on 16 May 1862 as a Private in Company B, 38th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 by a gunshot which

struck in the middle of the right parietal bone, carrying away a considerable portion of both tables. The wound was hurriedly dressed on the field, after which he was sent to hospital ...

The rest of the War

He was treated in a hospital in Charlottesville, VA and his wound closed on its own without any surgery. He went home on furlough then returned to his company by April 1863. He suffered from epileptic fits and was frequently absent, sick until he was readmitted to a hospital on 18 May 1864 (by which time his regiment declared him a deserter). Assistant Surgeon R.R. Ritchie opened his skull by trephination to remove damaged and depressed skull bone and found the bullet resting on his brain. He healed well and a complete recovery was predicted. He was absent on sick leave after August 1864 with no later military record.
