Before Antietam

He enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company C, 14th Indiana Infantry on 30 August 1862, initially an unassigned recruit.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 by a gunshot that fractured his spine.

The ball entered at the lower and outer surface of the crest of the ilium [pelvis bone] and imbedded itself deeply in the side of the last lumbar vertebra.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD on 28 September and sent on to Philadelphia, PA on 30 September. He was admitted to the Summit House Hospital there on 6 October and had surgery to remove the bullet the same day. He recovered sufficiently to return to duty on 12 December 1862. He was discharged as a Corporal, date not given.
