Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker on the Jonas Scramlin place at Climax in Kalamazoo County, MI. He enlisted at Galesburg on 7 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, Seventh Michigan Infantry on 22 August.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was listed as a deserter on 30 June 1863 at Uniontown, MD.
