Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 18 year old farmer in Bibb County, AL, he enlisted at Scottsville as a Private in Company B, 44th Alabama Infantry on 15 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the head (thigh?) in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #4 in Frederick, MD on 12 October and sent on to Ft. McHenry in Baltimore on the 17th. He as transferred to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 20 October, admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #4 in Richmond, VA on the 26th, furloughed home on 17 November, in a hospital in Selma, AL in January 1863, and returned to duty by May. He was mortally wounded at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863 and died on 3 October.

His father James M. Nelson filed for his final pay in August 1864.
