Age 47, European born, he enlisted at Leesburg, VA on 1 September 1862, as a (paid?) substitute for Private William Madison Hobdy, and mustered as a Private in Company C, 44th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He signed a parole on 27 September 1862 indicating he did not want to be exchanged and returned to the Confederate Army, and was allowed to travel in any loyal state. He was listed as a deserter by his regiment and never returned to them.
