Before Sharpsburg

He was a married 40 year old farmer at Randolph, AL when he enlisted there on 31 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 44th Alabama Infantry (as a substitute for James F McCary).

On the Campaign

He was seriously wounded by a gunshot to his mouth in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the 3rd Alabama Hospital in Richmond, VA on 28 September and was furloughed home for 40 days on 6 October. By July 1863 he was listed as absent without leave and did not return. He was later listed in a register of "maimed soldiers" and was paroled as a "straggler" at Selma, AL in June 1865.
