Before Sharpsburg

A married 38 year old farmer in Calhoun County, AL, he enlisted on 6 July 1861 in Randolph County and mustered as a Private in Company D, 13th Alabama Infantry but was discharged on 22 November 1861 at Yorktown, VA. He enlisted again, in Arbacoochee, AL, as a Private in Company I, 44th Alabama Infantry on 24 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 27 September and furloughed home on 21 October. He returned to duty in January or February 1863. He was detailed to the Divisional Quartermaster fro 1 July to 31 August 1864. He was admitted to the hospital at Howard's Grove in Richmond, VA in 7 November 1864 and again in February 1865. He was captured in a Richmond hospital on 3 April 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, MD on 2 May. He took an oath of allegiance at the US Army General Hospital at Point Lookout on 19 July 1865 and was released.
