Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old farmer at Gibson in Glascock County, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 a Private in Company A, 48th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by gunshots to his face, neck, and both legs in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, and was captured there.

The rest of the War

He was at Fort McHenry to 14 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was furloughed home on 4 November and returned to duty about July 1863, but was discharged for disability on 8 October 1863.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer at Tennille in Washington County, GA, but by 1880 was farming in Titus County, TX. In 1900 he was retired and lived with his daughter Vannie (McMurry) and her family in the village of Brandon in Hill County, TX.

His service from Henderson1 and his Compiled Service Records,2 online from fold3. He's also on a casualty list in the Richmond (VA) Enquirer of 17 October 1862, which says he was killed there. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860-1900. His gravesite is on Findagrave.

He married Mary Susan Kelly (1841-1894) in January 1857 and they had 9 children.
