Age 18, from the Orangeburg District, SC he enlisted on 1 July 1861 at James Island, SC and mustered as a Private in Company B, First South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and "was seen to fall, enemy capturing the position immediately after."

The rest of the War

His father John W Brown filed a claim for his final pay of $97.23 in April 1863 which was paid in December 1863. John filed at the same time for another son, Joseph F Brown, also a Private in Company B, who had been killed on 3 July 1862.
