Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old dyer in a factory living with his mother-in-law in the Richmond Factory section of Augusta, Richmond County, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as 4th Corporal of Company I, 48th Georgia Infantry. He was 2nd Corporal by June and was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 10 August.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the hand in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on wounded furlough at Staunton, VA from 22 September to 30 December 1862 then detailed as a hospital nurse to at least February 1863. He was back with his company that summer, but on 27 August 1863 was deemed disabled by his Sharpsburg wound and detailed as a post guard at Gordonsville, VA to the end of the war.

After the War

By 1870 he was a farmer back in Augusta, GA, and in 1880 was a laborer there. In 1900 he worked in an Augusta repair shop, but in December 1909 was admitted as a resident to the Confederate Soldiers' Home at Edgewood near Atlanta in Fulton County, GA. He lived away from the Home for brief periods in 1910, 1913, and 1915-16, and was discharged for the last time on 31 (or 3) December 1918.

He married Julia Evans Thompson (1844-1920) in 1860 and they had 3 sons and a daughter between 1867 and 1874.
