Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a prosperous, unmarried 32 year old planter with 37 slaves in Beaufort, SC. He was appointed Captain of the Palmetto Guard of Charleston, SC on 12 March 1861, enrolled with them for war service on 1 May at Charleston, and mustered as Captain of what became Company I of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry on 22 May.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was detailed as "acting field officer" (Major) after Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862, and was mortally wounded by a gunshot through his lungs while commanding a skirmish line at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He died in a private home nearby a week later.
His brother Edward filed for his final pay of $177.33 in December 1863.

George was second of the 4 children of Charlotte Barnwell (1808-1841) and George Cuthbert (1803-1835); all four were given the same middle name.
