Before Sharpsburg

He had been a State Cadet and member of the Palmetto Guard before the war. Age 24, from the Orangeburg District, he enlisted on 1 May 1861 at Charleston, SC, and mustered as First Corporal of Company I of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry on 22 May. He was promoted to Sergeant, date not given, and elected 3rd Lieutenant on 2 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was "shot near the heart" and killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was originally buried in Elk Branch Presbyterian Church Cemetery Duffields, Jefferson County, VA (now WV) and reinterred in Charles Town, date not given.

His father Dr. Artemus T. Darby filed for his final pay of $314.89 in March 1863.
