Before Sharpsburg

Age 20, he enlisted at Camden, SC on 9 April 1861 and mustered on 23 May as a Private in Company E of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Sharpsburg about 19 September 1862; he had been detailed to remain behind with the wounded of his brigade.

The rest of the War

He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 27 September, was a "convalescent" assigned to the US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD as a nurse on 15 November, and was sent on to Baltimore for exchange on 28 November 1862. He was back with his company by the end of the year and was promoted to 4th Corporal on 7 January 1863, 2nd Corporal by August 1863, and 5th Sergeant by April 1864. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864.
