Before Sharpsburg

A farmer's son, in 1860 he was a 20 year old farmer living with his parents and younger sister in the Lancaster District, SC. He enlisted at Lancaster Court House, SC on 28 April 1861 and mustered on 22 May as a Private in Company H of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. He was appointed 4th Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 27 September, sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, then on to Fortress Monroe, VA on 20 October for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 29 October and furloughed home for 30 days on 15 November 1862. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 12 January 1864 and was wounded again, by a gunshot at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May. He was furloughed for 60 days on 3 June 1864. He was surrendered and paroled with the regiment at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Pleasant Hill, Lancaster County, SC.
