Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer on his parents' modest place at Hickory Head in the Lancaster District, SC. He enlisted at Lancaster Court House, SC on 28 April 1861 and mustered on 22 May as a Private in Company H of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 27 September, sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, then on to Fortress Monroe, VA on 18 October for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 29 October and furloughed home for 40 days on 20 November 1862. He returned to duty by August 1863. He was again wounded and captured, at Cedar Creek, VA in October 1864, with no later military record.
