He was conscripted and enrolled at Columbia, SC on 1 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company C of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to the left side of his chest in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, Va on 12 October, where a surgeon noted the "ball still retained in the cavity. Patient's general condition very good, but wound looking unhealthy." He was furloughed home on 17 October 1862 "doing well" but did not return to his company. He was dropped from the rolls by October 1863.
