Before Antietam

Son of Irish immigrants, in 1860 he was a 31 year old living with his parents and 6 siblings in Philadelphia, PA; his father a successful liquor dealer. He enrolled there on 10 August 1861 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company N, 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was First Lieutenant by September 1862.

On the Campaign

He probably commanded Company N and was in action with them at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain on 1 January 1863 and was discharged on 26 February 1863.

After the War

By 1870 he was again living in Philadelphia.
