Before Sharpsburg
A magistrate's son, in 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his father and 3 siblings in Sumter, SC. He enlisted there on 8 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry on 23 May. He was promoted to 4th Corporal by April 1862 and to 2nd Sergeant by September.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was furloughed home and returned to his regiment about a year later, by October 1863. He was appointed First Sergeant about April 1864 and was with his company to their surrender and parole at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.
