Before Sharpsburg
Age 21, he enlisted in Camden, SC on 24 April 1861 and mustered on 22 May as a Private in Company G of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by December 1861 and appointed 3rd Lieutenant on 13 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was furloughed home to Liberty Hill, SC by October and was back on duty by the end of 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 4 July 1863 and was with his company to at least 27 March 1865, when he offered his resignation on the grounds that his "regimental commanding officer having said that I am incapable of commanding a company" and he asked "the privilege of choosing my company in this department." There is no later record in his military file.
