Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 3 siblings on the family farm at Rockford/Mt Olive, AL. He enlisted in Coosa County, AL on 2 July 1861 and mustered a Private in Company H, 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was severely wounded by a piece of shell to his right leg at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He returned to his company in September 1863 and was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
