Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 18 year old apprentice tanner living with his parents, 6 siblings, and 4 slaves on their farm at Roanoke in Randolph County, AL. Giving his occupation as mechanic, he enlisted there on 15 February 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Except for a furlough in May 1864, he was with his company until he was wounded at Squirrel Level Road near Petersburg, VA on 1 October 1864. He was in a Richmond hospital by the next day and furloughed home on 15 October for 35 days. He returned to duty and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

His brother Lawson was also at Sharpsburg, and was wounded there. Brother William D Ford (b. 1844) enlisted in Company I in March 1864 but died of disease in June 1864.
