Before Sharpsburg
An unmarried 20 year old farmer from Buchanan, GA, he enlisted in Randolph County (or Montgomery), AL on 26 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded by a gunshot to his right elbow at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a hospital in Culpeper, VA on 26 September, transferred to one in Farmville, VA by 3 October. By 22 December he was diagnosed with "opacity of cornea following variola" (smallpox) and was finally returned to duty on 23 March 1863. He was wounded again, by gunshots to his left hand and foot at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was absent on wounded furlough and on detail into 1864. He was captured at Hanover Court House, VA on 25 May 1864 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there on 14 June 1864 and was released.
