Before Sharpsburg

A 30 year old carpenter, he enrolled as a Private in Captain D.A. Hubbard's company of mounted infantry at Harvey Creek, TX in July 1861 and they mustered for state service in August. He enlisted again, with Lt. Roberdeau on 11 (or 15) March 1862 at Columbus, Colorado County, and mustered as a Private in Company B, 5th Texas Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and was detailed to go into the town of Sharpsburg on the evening on 16 September 1862 to obtain rations. He had not returned to his company by the time fighting began the next day.

The rest of the War

He was granted a furlough home to Monroe County, VA on 26 June 1863 for 30 days but was listed as absent without leave when he didn't return on time. Still absent from duty, he was discharged at Staunton, VA on 8 January 1864 for disability from a severe stomach ailment the examining surgeon characterized as "probably carcinoma of the pylorus."

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a carpenter in Monroe County, WV.
