Before Sharpsburg

A carpenter's son, in 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 5 siblings at Columbus in Colorado County, TX. He enlisted there on 10 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 5th Texas Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and was detailed to go into the town of Sharpsburg on the evening on 16 September 1862 to obtain rations. He had not returned to his company by the time fighting began the next day.

The rest of the War

He was elected First Sergeant of his company on 15 July 1863 and was wounded at Chickamauaga, GA in September. He went on wounded furlough on 1 October and was back on duty by January 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
