Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his father, 2 older brothers, and 23 slaves on their plantation at Columbus in Colorado County, TX. He enlisted there on 10 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 5th Texas Infantry. He was slightly wounded in the arm at Cold Harbor/Gaines' Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland but was sent to the rear, sick, at Sharpsburg on the evening of 16 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was with his unit to October 1863 when he was detailed as a courier to General Hood. He was furloughed for 30 days in January 1864. He was assigned as courier to Major General C.W. Field in April 1864, and was with him to at least the end of the year. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Colorado County.

He married Henrietta A Tanner (1849-1921) in December 1872, and they had 2 children (they fostered a third). Henrietta's family plantation was neighbor to the Carlton's before the war. Her sister Mary Elizabeth ("Bettie") married another veteran of Company B, D. Ellis Putney in 1865. Brother Calvin B Tanner (1839-1862) was also in Company B, but was discharged for disability in December 1861.
