Before Sharpsburg
Going by Horton, in 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker living with 2 younger siblings and (or next door to) his mother and stepfather Posey near Adams in Wilcox County, GA. He enlisted on 3 March 1862 in Abbeville, GA and mustered as a Private in Company H, 10th Georgia Infantry, the Wilcox County Rifles.

He was with his company in Maryland.
The rest of the War
He was with his unit without break to the end of the war, and was surrendered with them and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
He married in Wilcox County, GA in 1870, and by 1880 and to at least 1900 was a farmer there. By 1910 he had retired and was living with his oldest son Ashley and family on their farm in Wilcox County; he'd become totally blind due to iritis by 1914.
