Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old laborer living with his parents and 4 younger siblings on their small farm at Friendship in Butler County, Al. He enlisted on 19 July 1861 at Montgomery, AL and mustered as a Private in Company G of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware from 6 or 7 July to 7 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
