Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 36 year old painter from Tuskegee, AL, he enlisted on 19 July 1861 in Montgomery, AL and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by 6 July. He made a statement that he wanted to enter US Army service in August 1863, but did not enlist. He remained a prisoner until he took an oath of allegiance to the United States on 3 May 1865 and was released.

After the War

He was in Montgomery, AL in 1897.

His service from his Compiled Service Records1 online from fold3, also as Lafore and Lafow, and from the Alabama Archives.2 He told his captors at Fort Delaware he was born in Ohio.
