Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 19 year old farmer living with his parents and 3 siblings on their small farm at Rockdale in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Eastville, AL on 12 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was elected 2nd Sergeant on 17 September 1861 and appointed Junior 2nd/3rd Lieutenant on 3 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and but was afterward ill and not with them at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July and captured nearby, at Greencastle, PA on 5 July 1863. He was treated at the Satterlee US Army Hospital in Philadelphia to 13 July, then at a US Army hospital in Chester, PA. He was sent to Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, OH on 3 September 1863 and was transferred to Point Lookout, MD for exchange on 14 March 1865.

After the War

In 1907 he was living in Anniston, Calhoun County, AL and by 1910 he was a resident of the Alabama Soldiers' Home at Mountain Creek/Marbury in Chilton County, AL, still unmarried.
