Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an unmarried 30 year old farmer living with his parents and 8 siblings on their small farm at Rockdale in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Montgomery, AL on 26 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was appointed First Corporal on 12 December 1862 and was with his unit to at least October 1864, the last record in his military file.
After the War
By 1870 to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Lamar/Saxons/Pine Hill in Randolph County, AL. In 1920 he was retired and living with his daughter Mary Rosa Lee (Landers) and her family at Pine Hill, then age 80.

His father William R (1818-1862) and brothers Abner and John J also enlisted in Company K; William was killed at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862, while John, who enlisted in April 1862 and may have been at Sharpsburg with his brothers, survived the war. Abner's fate is unknown.
