Before Sharpsburg

A married 26 year old farmer from Lineville in Clay County, AL, he enlisted at Montgomery, AL on 19 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed First Sergeant on 18 December 1862 to date from the battle of Sharpsburg. He was seriously wounded by a gunshot to his left thigh at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and in Richmond, VA hospitals to 19 July, then back with his unit. He transferred to the CS Navy on 1 April 1864.
