Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 18 year old living with his parents on their farm at New Providence in Pike County, AL. He enlisted at Greenville, Butler County, AL on 5 July 1861 (or at Montgomery, AL on 19 July) and mustered as a Private in Company G of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was appointed 3rd Corporal to date from 1 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Falling Waters, MD on 14 July 1863 on the return from Gettysburg and was a prisoner at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC to 8 August, then at Point Lookout, MD to 3 March 1864, when he was exchanged and returned to duty. He was "killed in the ditches by shell" at Petersburg, VA on 30 August 1864.
