Before Sharpsburg
He was an unmarried 15 year old farmer from Tuskegee, AL, when he gave his age as 17, enlisted at Montgomery, AL on 19 July 1861, and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Corporal on 16 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Corporal on 1 January 1863 and killed in battle at Chancellorsville, VA on 4 May 1863.
His father James filed for his final pay of $177.06 in December 1863, which was probably paid in August 1864.

His father James Patterson (1826-?) had enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 12th Alabama Infantry in July 1861 and transferred to Company B of the 13th Alabama in October 1862 in exchange for G.W. Ward. He was with the company to at least October 1864 and died later that year or shortly after the war.
