Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 19 year old farmer living with his parents and 4 siblings on their small farm at Rockdale in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Montgomery, AL on 26 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 19 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 2nd Sergeant on 1 July 1863 and elected 2nd Lieutenant on 14 August 1863. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
