Before Sharpsburg
Son of a prominent Wilcox County lawyer, planter, and politician, in 1860 he was a married 23 year old lawyer at Rehoboth in Wilcox County, AL. He enrolled in Bridgeport, AL on 6 July 1861 and mustered as a Corporal in Company A of the 13th Alabama Infantry. He was reduced to Private on 20 September 1861 but was appointed First Corporal by the end of 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 7 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 25 September. He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 28 September and formally exchanged on 8 November 1862 at Aikens' Landing, VA. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. He was briefly held at Fort Delaware, then a prisoner at Johnson's Island near Sandusky, OH from 20 July 1863 to 24 February 1865 when he was sent to City Point, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 2 March with no later military record.
After the War
By 1880 he was teaching school in Camden, AL.

He married Susan A. Seltzer (1841-1890) in March 1858 and they had 4 children.
His brother Samuel (1843-1885) was also in Company A, and was its Captain from July 1862; he was on furlough home in September 1862.
