Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 28 year old engineer from Montgomery, AL he enlisted there on 19 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and was captured there.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware to 2 October, sent to Aikens' Landing, VA, and formally exchanged there on 1 November 1862. He was sick in hospitals in Richmond, VA, then detailed as a nurse there and in a hospital in Staunton, VA by March 1863, "unfit for field service." He was captured there on 27 September 1864 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD from 13 October to 14 May 1865, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released; he gave his residence as Rockingham County, VA.
