Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an unmarried 16 year old living with his parents and 8 siblings on their small farm at Rockdale in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Randolph County on 6 July 1861 and mustered in Montgomery, AL on 19 July as a Private in Company D, 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at Keedysville, MD on 20 September and formally exchanged and returned to duty on 15 November 1862. He was captured again, at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and was a prisoner at Fort Delaware from 6 July 1863 to 14 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Cleburne County, AL. In 1900 he was farming in Bosque County, TX and by 1920, then 75 years old, was a fruit farmer in Erath County, TX.

He married Melissa Jane Howle (1847-1896) and they had 9 children between 1866 and 1879. He married again, her cousin the widow Sarah Indiana "India" Howle Hammons (1857-1940) in February 1897 and they had 2 more children.
