In 1860 he was a married 26 year old blacksmith (with his brother William) at Carrollton in Carroll County, GA. He enlisted in Bowdon, GA on 30 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, Cobb's (GA) Legion, Infantry Battalion. He was seriously wounded in the left arm at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and his arm was amputated. He was afterward absent in hospitals and on furlough. He resigned his commission in December 1863 for disability, but that does not appear to have been accepted, as he was on the company rolls to at least November 1864, then recommended for medical retirement. In 1870 he was proprietor of a liquor store, confectionary, and grocery "in the corner room at the Sims House" in La Grange, Carroll County, GA.
