Before Sharpsburg
He began the practice of medicine in Montgomery, AL in 1854. A 28 year old physician in Montgomery in 1860, he enrolled in Richmond, VA on 6 August 1861 and mustered as Surgeon of the 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his regiment at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He transferred to post duty at Mobile, AL on 5 March 1863 and served there as Surgeon and hospital administrator to the end of the war.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a prosperous physician in Montgomery, AL.

His gravesite is on Findagrave, source also of an excellent post-war photograph. There is a c. 1853 photograph of him online from the Alabama Archives.
He married Mary Louise Marks (1834-1916) in July 1857 and they had 6 children. Their youngest, James Marks Williams (1873-1922), USMA 1900, retired as Colonel, USA in 1920.
