Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an unmarried 15 year old farmer living with his parents and 3 siblings on their small place at Rockdale in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Randolph County on 21 July 1861 and mustered in Montgomery, AL on 26 July as a Private in Company E, 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his company at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was captured the next day at Boonsboro, MD.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 to return to duty. He was wounded in the right foot at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and in hospitals in Richmond, VA to 11 July 1863, then returned to duty. He was captured (listed as a deserter) on 21 July 1863, was admitted to the Lincoln US Army hospital in Washington, DC with a fever on 3 August, and transferred to the Old Capitol Prison in the city on 14 October. He was sent to Point Lookout, MD on 28 October 1863 and took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released to enlist for US Service on 22 January 1864. No record of that service found.
