Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 19 year old farmer living with his parents and 6 siblings on their prosperous farm at Rehoboth in Wilcox County, AL. He enlisted in Bridgeport, AL on 6 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F, 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He continued in service with his company in all their battles to the end of the war. He was captured at Bermuda Hundred, VA on 3 April 1865 and was held at Hart's Island in New York Harbor to 15 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
