Before Sharpsburg

Oldest of 10 children, in 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer living with his parents, 7 younger siblings, and 2 slaves on their farm near Yanceyville in Caswell County, NC. He enlisted at Camp Ruffin, VA on 18 July 1861 and he mustered as a Private in Company A of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 31 August. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty about January 1863. He was mortally wounded on 29 May 1864, place not given, and died on 1 July. His father filed a claim for his final pay in January 1865.
