Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 21 year old physician living with his father, 5 siblings, and 58 slaves on their plantation near Yanceyville in Caswell County, NC. He enlisted at Yanceyville on 29 April 1861 and he mustered as a Private in Company A of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 24 June in Raleigh. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 26 April 1862 at the army reorganization.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his right arm and was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 18 September, transferred to the Capitol Hospital in Washington, DC on 21 September, and on to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on the 30th. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange and was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 6 October. He was furloughed home on 11 October and was on furlough and in hospitals in Richmond and Danville, VA into March 1863, afterward detailed to the hospital in Danville as a Hospital Steward to at least October 1864, disabled for field service. There is no later military record.
