Before Antietam
He had served as Captain in the 1st Ohio (Volunteer) Regiment, in the Mexican War (1847-48). In 1860 he was a physician in Georgetown, OH. In May 1861 at it's organization he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 12th Ohio Infantry. Colonel John W. Lowe was killed at Carnifex Ferry, VA on 10 September 1861, and White was promoted to Colonel.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland.
The rest of the War
In September 1863, then in command of a Brigade in West Virginia, he organized an anti-guerilla force later known as "Blazer's Scouts". He mustered out of the service on 11 July 1864.
After the War
By 1870 he was again a practicing physician in Georgetown, OH.

He was said to be a neighbor, classmate, and childhood friend of Ulysses S Grant. He named his first child Ulysses Simpson Grant White (1848-1917).
