Before Sharpsburg

Age 20, he enlisted at Ranalesburg, NC on 3 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 13 May in Raleigh. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 28 September and furloughed home on 3 October. He returned from furlough about January 1863 and was wounded again, by a gunshot to his left shoulder at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May. He was killed at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863.
