Before Sharpsburg
Son of prosperous shoe & boot manufacturer (w/1 slave), in 1860 he was a 19 year old laborer living with his parents, 3 younger siblings, and maternal aunt Sarah (+8 slaves) in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC. He enlisted at Ranalesburg, NC on 3 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 13 May in Raleigh. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
By 1880 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Steele Creek in Mecklenburg County, NC.
