Before Sharpsburg

Age 25, he enlisted in Leasburg, NC on 1 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 1 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his hand at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, and returned to duty about August. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 26 December and transferred to the CS Navy on 3 (or 16) April 1864.

After the War

In 1880 he was a laborer living next door to his farmer in-laws in Orange County, NC but by 1900 was farming his own place at Olive Hill in Person County, NC. In 1910 he retired and lived with his son Eugene back in Caswell County.
